10 died in Niger road crash: FRSC intensifies campaign against speeding

A tragic road accident on Monday, March 23, 2026, in the Tafa axis of Niger State has claimed the lives of ten individuals.

This prompts the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to renew urgent warnings against traffic violations, particularly excessive speeding and the perilous practice of mixed loading.

The incident, which occurred within the operational jurisdiction of RS7.26A Tafa Outpost, underscores the severe consequences of non-compliance with established safety regulations.

The fatal crash took place at approximately 0820 hours along the Tafa–Gujeni route at Malam Tanko.

According to statement released by the Agency revealed that the accident involved a DAF tanker, registration number FKY136XD, which was illegally conveying thirty-three (33) male occupants alongside goods.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the FRSC indicate that the primary cause of the accident was excessive speed, leading to a loss of control by the driver.
Of the thirty-three individuals on board, ten (10) tragically lost their lives at the scene. Twenty (20) others sustained varying degrees of injuries, while a fortunate three (3) escaped unhurt.

The FRSC highlighted the particularly disturbing aspect of mixed loading, a practice where both goods and human beings are transported in the same vehicle.

This dangerous and illegal act has been consistently cautioned against by the Corps due to its potential for catastrophic outcomes.
FRSC operatives demonstrated a swift response to distress call, successfully rescuing twenty-three (23) victims alive. They also efficiently cleared the accident scene, restoring the free flow of traffic.

The injured were promptly evacuated to Umar Musa General Hospital, Sabon Wuse, for urgent medical attention. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal, expressed profound concern over the incident, describing it as entirely avoidable.

He emphasized that “no journey is worth the loss of human lives” and strongly condemned the persistent disregard for safety advisories by some road users.
He reiterated the Corps’ commitment to intensifying enforcement and public enlightenment campaigns aimed at curbing excessive speeding and eradicating the menace of mixed loading across Nigerian highways.

In light of this tragedy, transport operators and drivers are strongly advised to adhere to safety regulations, maintain prescribed speed limits, and refrain from using inappropriate vehicles for passenger conveyance.

The Corps Marshal extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who perished and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

The FRSC urged the General public to remain safety-conscious at all times, emphasizing that road safety is a collective responsibility.
