Dr. Olufemi Ogunyemi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA), has been honored by the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) with Award of Exemplary Leadership Qualities in Public Service.
This recognition sheds light on Ogunyemi’s remarkable journey and his profound impact on transforming Nigeria’s free trade zones and strengthening media relations.
Unknown to many, Dr. Ogunyemi harbored a deep connection with journalism long before his appointment as NEPZA boss by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
For three years, he contributed as a columnist for veteran journalist Sam Amuka’s publication, writing under
the moniker ‘The Pain Doctor’.
This background, he revealed, instilled in him a profound understanding of the strategic importance of journalism and public communication in promoting government institutions and national development.
Upon assuming office at NEPZA three years ago, Dr. Ogunyemi faced a significant challenge.
Despite overseeing over 63 free trade zones, approximately 700 enterprises, and nearly 600 staff members, public awareness of NEPZA’s crucial contributions to the Nigerian economy
was remarkably low.
“When I joined NEPZA three years ago, these zones were doing a lot of great work for the country, but the public did not know about it. I knew we needed to bring the media closer,” Ogunyemi stated.
His media-savvy approach proved transformative. By actively engaging with journalists, Dr. Ogunyemi successfully elevated public awareness of NEPZA’s activities and the economic significance of free trade zones.
This strategic communication effort has been instrumental in showcasing the agency’s role in fostering economic growth and creating investment
opportunities within Nigeria.
Mr. Shola Akingboye, Chairman of the Association of Corporate Online Editors, lauded Dr. Ogunyemi for his visionary leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service.
Akingboye highlighted Ogunyemi’s exceptional management of NEPZA and his sustained efforts towards the development of free trade zones, which have significantly contributed to national development.
“You have consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership through dedication, integrity, and a forward- thinking approach to public service,” Akingboye remarked.
Dr. Ogunyemi, who often declines awards due to his demanding schedule, made an exception for the ACOE recognition.
He cited the association’s credibility and his deep appreciation for the media profession as his reasons for personally accepting the honor.
His acceptance underscores his belief in collaborative efforts to improve the nation, stating, “I pray that we continue to work together to improve our country.
