Diplomatic debut: Yakubu arrives in Doha to strengthen Nigeria-Qatar ties

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Nigeria’s esteemed former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has commenced his tenure as the country’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar.

According to the statement released, Yakubu’s arrival in Doha marks a significant moment for Nigeria’s diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

Ambassador Yakubu received a warm reception upon his arrival on Wednesday, greeted by His Excellency Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The welcoming party also included a
distinguished delegation of 13 African Ambassadors, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), and Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar.

Bringing a distinguished record of the public service to his new role, Professor Yakubu’s tenure as INEC Chairman from 2015 to 2025 was marked by pivotal electoral reforms.

These reforms significantly strengthened Nigeria’s electoral process, integrating advanced technology, enhancing voter accreditation systems, and fostering greater public confidence in democratic institutions.

He is widely recognized for his unwavering commitment to transparency, professionalism, and democratic governance, having successfully overseen numerous national and off-cycle elections.

His appointment as Ambassador to Qatar underscores the Federal Govt’s profound confidence in his leadership, extensive experience, and the proven capacity to advance Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and bilateral interests within one of the Middle East’s most strategically important nations.

Ambassador Yakubu is expected to play a crucial role in deepening relationship between Nigeria and Qatar, particularly in key sectors such as trade, investment, energy, education, and fostering stronger people-to-people exchanges.
