Emefiele: Why DSS act of lawlessness must be condemned – Fayose

The former Governor of Ekiti State, Peter Ayodele Fayose has called for the condemnation of the act of the Department of State Security Agency (DSS) at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday.

Fayose on his social media platform made the call while reacting to the Security Agency who rearrested the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, flouting the order of the Federal High Court.

Recall that Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu in June following several allegations charted against him by the DSS.

There had been previous uproar following his suspension by the President and his unlawful detention by the DSS before the security service prompted to charge the embattled security Governor to court.

The embattled suspended CBN Governor is facing two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition preferred against him by the Federal Ministry of Justice before the vacation judge, Justice Nicholas Oweibo.

Emefiele was accused of possessing a single-barrelled shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a licence and illegally being in possession of 23 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a licence.

He was granted bail after pleading not guilty to two counts bordering on the alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, while the court ordered that Emefiele be remanded at the correctional center pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.

However, the tides of the trial of Emefiele took a different turn with the DSS taking custody of the suspended and embattled apex bank chief despite the court order.

The DSS operatives and officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) clashed violently over the custody of suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, at the premises of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday.

According the report, the tussle which resulted in a prison officer’s cloth being torn had DSS operatives prevailing over the Correctional Service officials and whisking Emefiele away.

In this development, the Former Ekiti State Governor said on his Twitter handle that the DSS act at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos today, should be condemned by all lovers of democracy and rule of law in the country.

He expressed disappointment at the Security Agency, saying it’s painful that the DSS is yet to come to terms with the fact that the President of Nigeria today, is a product of struggles for democracy and won’t superintend over any act of lawlessness.

According to him, “The actions of the DSS today, is no doubt bringing negative image to the Govt and I’m sure that President Tinubu will act swiftly to curb their excesses so that they don’t give his govt bad name just as they did to the immediate past government.

“This is a function of failed or power drunk leadership in the DSS. It’s time for the President to act.

“No doubt, I am not a fan of Emefiele actions as CBN Governor which threw Nigerians into untold hardships with the politically motivated change of Naira notes.

However, it behoves on leaders of this country to speak out against acts capable of undermining democracy and rule of law.

Nigeria is under civil authority and security agencies, especially the DSS should be properly guided to purge themselves of this display of overzealousness.

The DSS men that participated in today’s show of shame should be promptly brought to book. More so that it happened within the sacred premises of the court.

“Most importantly, restructuring of the Organization is imperative for a today Nigeria that is desirous of deepening democratic governance”, Peter Ayodele Fayose said.
