FG Opens Key 30.58km Abuja–Kano Road Stretch

The Federal Government has commissioned a 30.58-kilometre section of the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway, renewing its pledge to complete critical road projects inherited from previous administrations.

The section was commissioned in Kano State on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the completed road as a major step toward strengthening national connectivity and improving the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods across the country.

He said the project had faced rising costs, slow construction and contractual challenges before the current administration directed the Ministry of Works to prioritise the completion of the outstanding sections.

According to the minister, the government is also extending the Kano section of the expressway to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport. Lot 1 of the project, covering 118 kilometres at an estimated cost of ₦252 billion, has reportedly been completed.

The upgraded road features continuously reinforced concrete pavement, asphalt surfacing, drainage works, improved road structures, solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras.

These interventions are expected to reduce travel discomfort, improve traffic flow and make night journeys safer for motorists.

Umahi said the expressway remains a strategic national asset because it links the Federal Capital Territory with major commercial and population centres in Northern Nigeria.

Beyond the North-West, he noted, the corridor supports trade, haulage, commerce and social interaction across the country.

Governor Yusuf welcomed the project, saying the improved road would strengthen transportation links, expand commercial opportunities and ease the movement of people and goods within Kano and neighbouring states.

The commissioning also featured two urban road projects delivered by the Kano State Government: the rehabilitation of Audu Bako Way and the dualisation of Nassarawa Hospital Roads.

The projects form part of the state’s urban renewal programme and are intended to ease congestion and improve mobility within Kano metropolis.

Federal lawmakers, traditional rulers and other stakeholders commended the government for completing the long-delayed road works.

The Emir of Daura, Faruk Umar Faruk, said the project demonstrated the administration’s commitment to completing major infrastructure schemes initiated by previous governments.

The Federal Ministry of Works said it would continue efforts to deliver ongoing road projects across the Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, describing reliable infrastructure as essential to economic growth, national integration and improved quality of life.
