United States has appluaded the Liberian President George Weah who conceded defeat on Friday to Joseph Boakai in the Presidential runoff election held on November 14.
In a statement released by the US State Department Spokesman, Mathew Miller stated that the United States congratulated President-elect Boakai on his victory and President Weah for his peaceful acceptance of the results.
The United States quoted President Weah in his concession speech saying, “Tonight, the CDC has lost the election, but Liberia has won.
“This is a time for graciousness in defeat, a time to place our country above party, and patriotism above personal interest. Let us heal the divisions caused by the campaign and come together as one nation and one united people.”
The United States congratulated the people of Liberia on holding a peaceful presidential runoff election.
“We note the broad participation of Liberians across the country and applaud commitment dedication of Liberian citizens in exercising their right to vote and in engaging in the electoral process peacefully.
Adding that Liberians deserve and expect free and fair, peaceful elections while called on all citizens to follow President Weah’s example and accept the results.
“We congratulate Liberia’s institutions on a successful electoral process, especially the dedicated work of the National Elections Commission and the thousands of Liberians who worked the polls”, United State added.
It was reported that Liberian President George Weah has conceded election defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai after losing in a tight run-off held this week.
The first round of voting did not produce an outright winner after both presidential candidates failed to secure a required 50+1 percent of the votes.
Boakai, 78, a former vice-president during Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf’s regime who lost to Weah in the 2017 election, amassed 50.9 percent of the vote against Weah’s 49.1 percent, with nearly all the votes counted, according to Liberia’s electoral commission.
