The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has drawn a sharp line between freedom and recklessness.
He warned Nigeria’s growing army of bloggers, content creators, and digital influencers that the power of their platforms demands accountability.
Speaking at the Niger State Bloggers, Online Publishers and Content Developers Forum in Abuja on Monday, Idris made it clear: the digital age offers unprecedented opportunities, but those opportunities must be anchored in truth.
“There is no democracy that can thrive without a responsible media. You cannot carry freedom and abandon responsibility,” the Minister declared — a statement that landed like a gauntlet before Nigeria’s vibrant but sometimes chaotic online media landscape.
The Minister’s message cut through the noise of digital era where misinformation spreads faster than facts, where sensationalism often beats substance, and where the line between opinion and truth has grown dangerously thin.
He urged content creators to verify before they publish, reject the temptation of disinformation, and use their reach to educate rather than mislead.
But Idris’s call to action went beyond journalism. He challenged young Nigerians to see their digital platforms as instruments of civic duty — tools for nation-building, not just revenue generation.
“Ethical communication is essential to strengthening democracy and public trust,” he stressed, framing responsible storytelling as a patriotic obligation.
The Minister also spotlighted Nigeria’s flagship achievement in digital education: the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated exclusively to Media and Information Literacy — a global first that positions Nigeria at the forefront of the fight against online falsehoods.
With the President’s administration standing firm on protecting press freedom while demanding ethical standards, the message to Nigeria’s digital creators is clear: the microphone is yours, but so is the responsibility.
