Nigeria: West Africa’s anchor of peace, stability, growth – FG

Nigeria stands as a critical pillar for the stability, peace, and economic prosperity of the West African region, the Federal Government reiterated on Thursday.

Speaking at the Voice of Nigeria (VON) Forum 2026 in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the nation’s robust recovery and growth trajectory, firmly rejecting narratives of instability.

“Nigeria’s stability and progress are closely tied to West Africa’s stability. A peaceful and democratic region creates opportunities for growth, investment, and shared prosperity,” stated Minister Idris.

He highlighted Nigeria’s enduring commitment to regional integration and democratic governance over the past five decades, citing significant contributions through peacekeeping missions, mediation efforts, and support for democratic transitions across the sub-region.

Addressing recent misleading reports, Idris firmly countered claims of Nigeria being on the brink of collapse. “We must reject the false narrative that Nigeria is on the brink of collapse.

This does not reflect the realities of governance, security management, and ongoing reforms. Nigeria remains stable and is moving forward,” he asserted, underscoring the nation’s steady progress in security and economic reforms.
On the security front, the Minister detailed the Federal Government’s substantial investment and operational successes. He revealed that the 2026 budget allocates a significant ₦5.41 trillion to security, marking it as the highest sectoral allocation.

This investment aims to bolster military capabilities, enhance intelligence coordination, and foster community-
based peacebuilding initiatives.

Recent operations have reportedly led to
the neutralization of key terror commanders and the rescue of thousands of kidnapped victims nationwide.
Economically, Idris reported positive outcomes from ongoing reforms, pointing to improved fiscal stability and optimistic growth projections.

“Fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange reforms are stabilising public finances. Inflation has reduced, and global institutions project Nigeria’s economy will grow above the global average in 2026,” he noted, signaling a promising economic outlook.

Minister Idris also lauded the Voice of Nigeria’s pivotal role in enhancing Nigeria’s international image and strengthening public diplomacy.

He described VON as a crucial platform for combating misinformation and showcasing Nigeria’s contributions to regional peace and development.
He concluded by calling for a unified effort among government bodies, media, civil society, and international partners to uphold democracy and regional stability.

“Sustaining democracy and peace requires collective effort. We must work together to strengthen institutions, promote accurate information, and support regional cooperation,” the Minister urged.

In attendance at the VON Forum 2026 were notable dignitaries, including the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, PhD, CON.
