NYSC DG advises on development, read riot act to Corps members

The Director General of National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General YD Ahmed has urged the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream One Corps Members to ensure development of their various host communities with projects that would improve the standard of living of the residents.

General Ahmed stated this while addressing Corps Members during his visit to NYSC Sokoto and Kebbi State Orientation Camps, as contained in a statement released by the Scheme.

The DG said Community Development Service is one of the four compulsory cardinal programmes of the Scheme that every Corps Member must participate actively before being considered to collect the Certificate of National Service.

He however appealed to the Corps Members to study the felt needs of their host communities and obtain approval from NYSC before embarking on any project.

“Source for funds to execute projects within your host communities. Note that it is an offence to sponsor projects with your monthly allowances.

Please don’t accept free rides from strangers. Go to approved motorparks and board vehicles whenever you are traveling.

Follow the security lectures you were exposed to in camp anywhere you are posted to and ensure you don’t expose yourselves to danger”, he said.

The NYSC Sokoto State Coordinator, Alhaji Yakubu Yaro Usman in his remark described the Corps Members in Wamakko camp as law-abiding and dutiful.

In a similar vein, the NYSC Kebbi State Coordinator, Mrs Okolo Aghata Banki said a total of 154 camp officials comprising NYSC Staff and personnel from other collaborating agencies are working in synergy. She said a total of 1,088 Corps Members were registered in camp.

Mrs Okolo added that the security and general well-being of all Corps Members in the camp remains topmost priority, adding that all Camp Officials are at alert to the task of providing every necessary guidelines for the Corps Members towards preparing them for their roles towards nation building.

Earlier, the Director General of National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General YD Ahmed has warned Corps Members to avoid every form of misconduct that may lead them into trouble during their service year.

The DG stated this in his address to Corps Members during his visit to NYSC Kano State Orientation Camp in Kusallah Dam Karaye and Katsina State Orientation Camp.

He added that violators of NYSC byelaws and other laws of the country would be sanctioned appropriately.

While congratulating them on the successful completion of their courses of study, General Ahmed added that improper dressing in NYSC uniforms attracts sanctions.

“You must always dress well, especially while in NYSC uniforms. Wherever you are posted to, ensure that you respect the culture and traditions of the people you are going to serve.

NYSC would not condone any form of indiscipline. Avoid hard drugs, hooliganism, cybercrimes and other social vices that may put you in trouble. Utilize the service year to develop yourselves”, the DG said.

While presenting the camp situation report to the Director General, the NYSC Kano State Coordinator, Hajiya Halima Abdulkareem Abubakar said the Corps Members have all exhibited high level of honesty, dedication to duty and unalloyed loyalty to the Scheme.

As at the time of General Ahmed’s visit, a total of 1,734 Corps Members consisting of 871 males and 863 females were registered in Kano camp.

Similarly, the Katsina State Coordinator, Hajiya Aisha Mohammed stated that a total of 348 camp officials made up of 167 NYSC Staff and 181 from other collaborating agencies including 1,292 Corps Members comprising 686 males and 606 females are working in synergy towards achieving the desired results of the Orientation Exercise.

“The Corps Members are in high spirits and ready to contribute their quota to national development”, she said.
