The National Youth Service Corps management has reacted to the collapse of convenience occurred in the early hours of today, Friday 12th July, 2024, at Ekiti State Orientation Camp in Ise-Orun, Emure Ekiti, assured that the situation is under control.
In a statement released by the Scheme Spokesman, Eddy Megwa revealed that the strong collaboration of the entire camp officials who served as first responders to the two injured Corps Members from the incident were effectively coordinated by the State Coordinator.
The Scheme pressed further that those injured are very stable and receiving medical attention at a tertiary health facility in the State.
In his response to the situation, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General YD Ahmed expressed shock over the incident and used the opportunity to call on the state Government to urgently equip the Camp with sustainable facilities that will not endanger the lives of the Camp community.
The DG also stated that it is the primary function of various State Governments to build and maintain facilities in the Orientation Camps as contained in the NYSC Act.
Parents and guardians are hereby enjoined to remain calm as the Management committed to ensuring the safety of all Corps Members including Camp Officials in all NYSC Orientation Camps across the country.
NYSC to deal with Corps members traveled without permission
Earlier during his visit to Bayelsa and Rivers State Orientation camp, the DG has warned Corps members to avoid traveling without getting approval from the National Youth Service Corps.
According to the statement released by the Scheme, he said any Corps Member that travel without obtaining permission from NYSC would be dealt with according to NYSC byelaws.
The DG also urged them to be security conscious at all times, adding that they must avoid youthful adventures that can put them in harm’s way.
General Ahmed advised the Corps Members to add value to their Place of Primary Assignments, serve their host communities diligently and execute laudable projects that would improve the standard of living of the residents.
The NYSC Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mrs Obiageli Okpalifo in her brief to the Director General said all the Corps Members have adjusted to camp life.
Similarly, the Rivers State Coordinator, Mr George Mfongang disclosed that the 1,800 registered Corps Members comprising 663 males and 1,137 females have exceptionally displayed high level of patriotism, discipline, commitment, enthusiasm and respect for the constituted authority.
