The World has expressed sympathies over the earthquake that struck in part of Morocco on Friday, which killed over 2000 people and left 1404 others injured with initial reports indicating more than 300,000 people have been affected.
According to the American Geological Institute, the earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 6.8 at 11:11 pm, while Morocco’s seismic monitoring network recorded it at 7 on the Richter scale, making it the most powerful earthquake since 1960.
In a report, Morocco’s Ministry of Interior said the earthquake death toll reached 2,012 as of 10 p.m. on Saturday, while new data showed that the injured victims number also jumped to 1,059, including 1,404 in critical conditions.
Also reported that families were camped in public spaces over fear of sleeping in their own homes, but the city remains busy with tourists and locals alike. Efforts to clear streets of debris have been relentless, and the major thoroughfares have been successfully cleaned.
United States President, Joe Biden in a tweet on Saturday expressed his sadness over the devastating earthquake, he said, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Morocco.
Adding that “the United States stands by Morocco and my friend King Mohammed VI at this difficult moment. And, my Administration is ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Moroccan people.
Also, in a statement through the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken on Saturday, who on behalf of the people of United States, expressed his deep sadness at the loss of life, destruction caused by earthquake and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected.
He said the United States is ready to provide any necessary assistance as Morocco responds to this tragedy. “Our thoughts are with the Moroccan people, and we offer our unwavering support and solidarity to our Moroccan partners at this tragic time”, Blinken added.
The President of the European Council Charles Michel together with the members of the European Union and Council sent a letter to His Majesty Mohammed VI of Morocco following the recent tragic events of the devastating earthquake.
According to the letter, “We, the Members of the European Council, would like to share with you our most sincere condolences for the terrible loss of life following the dreadful earthquake that took place on 8 September 2023.
“We are deeply saddened by the devastating consequences of this tragic event. The European Union and its Member States stand in full solidarity with the people of Morocco in this difficult moment. Our thoughts are with all Moroccans who have lost their cherished family members and
friends.
“We wish full and speedy recovery to all those who have been injured. As close friends, partners of Morocco, we are ready to assist in any way you may deem useful. Our thoughts of compassion continue to be with You and Your people. Please accept, Your Majesty, the assurance of our highest consideration”.
The Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu also extended his heartfelt condolences to King Mohammed VI of Morocco following the Friday’s devastating earthquake in his homeland, which claimed many lives.
The President who commiserated with all families that lost loved ones and all those otherwise affected by this tragedy, wished a full and swift recovery to those who were injured assured that the heartfelt prayers and thoughts of Nigerians are with them during this difficult moment of tragedy.
President Tinubu said, “In the face of this adversity, Nigeria will continue to stand in solidarity with Morocco as they recover, rebuild, and come out stronger than ever from this unfortunate event”.
