The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged $100,000 to each of the 12 D’Tigress players and $50,000 to each member of the technical crew following their victory over Mali to secure a historic fifth consecutive title at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
This was announced at the Presidential Reception held at the State House for the team on their return to the country after the team led by coach, Rena Wakama, clinched the title at the Palais des Sports de Treichville after defeating Mali by 78 to 64.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who was represented by the Vice President Sen. Kasshim Shettima expressed his pride and admiration for the team’s achievement.
“You have conquered Africa 78 to 64. It’s a declaration, not only of your tactical security but of your reading of the game and your wariness. And I assure you, you go forth with the blessings and support of the entire nation.”
The Vice President on behalf of the President praised the team’s resilience and spirit in the face of challenges.
In her remarks the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Senator Oluremi Tinubu highlighted the core values behind their success as hard work and teamwork.
She praised the players not only as athletes but as “ambassadors of sports of a great nation”.
The First Lady noted the significance of their victory coming at a time when Nigeria is already celebrating sporting excellence.
“Your victory comes at a time when Nigeria is basking in the glory of sporting excellence following the Super Falcons’ recent victory. We haven’t really gotten over that, and then this one. We are so glad to be able to celebrate you as well.”
“I say well done to you all, to the technical team, including Coach Rena Wakama. Your leadership and tutelage have paid off.”
The Captain of the team, Annie Okonkwo who thanked the President and the First Lady for their support all through the tournament pointed out that it bis a thing of pride for them to be able to represent the Nation.
“I do not think the sky is our limit. I believe we can go beyond that”.
In addition to the monetary gifts the team and their officials were also given I flat each and conferred with the National Honor of OON.
