United against terror: US, Nigeria move to tackle insecurity head-on

In a decisive move to combat the growing wave of terrorism and instability across West Africa, Nigeria and United States have reaffirmed their commitment to a robust strategic partnership.

During a high-stakes, three-day working visit to the U.S. capital, Nigeria’s National
Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, engaged in critical talks with top -tier American officials, including the Vice President J.D. Vance and Acting National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.


The meetings, which concluded on May 6, underscored a shared resolve to tackle complex security challenges head-on. At the heart of the discussions was the escalating security crisis in the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin.

Ribadu, conveying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s steadfast dedication to the
alliance, emphasized the urgent need for sustained cooperation to counter violent
extremism, transnational organized crime, and emerging cyber threats.
“Nigeria remains fully committed to working with international partners in promoting peace, stability, democratic governance, and economic development across Africa,” Ribadu noted, highlighting Nigeria’s pivotal role as a frontline state in the regional war against terror.

The diplomatic engagements also included strategic sessions with Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim.

Both nations reviewed the progress of the Nigeria‒U.S. Joint Working Group (JWG), a framework designed to the streamline intelligence sharing, military cooperation, and border security.
U.S. officials lauded Nigeria’s leadership in regional peace efforts, acknowledging the West African powerhouse as an indispensable ally.

The talks culminated in a mutual pledge
to enhance defense capacity building and implement practical measures to stabilize affected communities through a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach.

As the geopolitical landscape of West Africa continues to evolve, this renewed pact signals a formidable united front, promising enhanced security and resilience for the region.
