US commends Karol Nawrocki’s election victory as Polish President

The United States has extended congratulations to Karol Nawrocki on his election as President of the Republic of Poland.

The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio who in a statement released on Monday sent the congratulatory messages on behalf of the people and Government of the United States.
He said, “The Polish people have spoken and support a stronger military and securing their borders. Poland is a model Ally and key contributor to strengthening the NATO Alliance and its sovereign integrity against today’s challenges and those ahead”.

Rubio made it kmown that the United States and Poland share a strong and enduring partnership rooted in mutual commitment to security, prosperity, and the rule of law.
According to him, “Our cooperation in the energy sector— including nuclear energy— supports our expanding commercial ties and advances Poland’s energy security.

“We look forward to working closely with President-elect Nawrocki and Poland’s government to further our shared priorities”, the Secretary of State added.

Report has it that the Right-wing candidate Karol Nawrocki narrowly beat centrist Rafał Trzaskowski in Poland’s presidential election runoff, winning 50.89 percent of the vote to 49.11 percent, according to the electoral commission.

The result was a dramatic shift from an initial exit poll released immediately after voting ended at 9 p.m. In that survey, which had a 2 percentage point margin of error, Trzaskowski had 50.3 percent compared to 49.7 percent for Nawrocki. Turnout was 71.6 percent.

As reported Nawrocki, backed by the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party and also by United States President Donald Trump’s administration, aims to pull Poland away from the European mainstream in a more populist direction.

A Nawrocki victory deals a significant blow to the Tusk government. Many of its legislative efforts had been blocked by PiS-aligned incumbent President Andrzej Duda and that is likely to continue under Nawrocki.
