The United States has condemned the denial of credentials for multiple international journalists, domestic civil society members to cover the elections in Zimbabwe, and also delays in election observation accreditation.
In a statement released by the State Department Spokesman, Mathew Miller on Tuesday, while the United States called on all actors to commit to free, fair, and peaceful elections as Zimbabweans head to the polls on August 23, 2023.
The United States expressed concerns by recent actions leading up to the elections, including political violence and legislation that curtails human rights and freedoms enshrined in Zimbabwe’s constitution.
According to the statement, “The Zimbabwean people deserve the chance to choose their future without fear of repression or intimidation, in line with Zimbabwe’s constitution.
“We believe the best route to peace and prosperity is for governments to respect the right of their citizens to vote and allow for peaceful and democratic political processes”, the statement added.
The United States appealed to the government of Zimbabwe and all political leaders to ensure the elections are free of violence and coercion.
“While the United States does not support any party or candidate, we are committed to supporting the democratic process and backing Zimbabwean aspirations to combat corruption and strengthen the rule of law”, the statement said.
Report has it that about 6.6 million Zimbabweans are expected to take part in the neighbouring country’s second general election to be held since the end of Robert Mugabe’s 37-year-rule more than five years ago.
While the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has declared 11 candidates for presidency the real contest is between Emmerson Mnangagwa of the ruling Zanu-PF & Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change.
Mnangagwa narrowly defeated Chamisa five years ago following a coup that deposed Mugabe who at some point led a country that was regarded as the bread basket of Southern Africa.
Despite the history of elections marred by disputes and violence, Zimbabwean government has invited secretariat of Southern African Development Community (SADC) to observe the elections scheduled for today 23 August 2023.
