A 21-year-old Maryland man, identified as Nasire Best, was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents near White House checkpoint on Saturday night after he opened fire, prompting lockdown of the executive mansion.
President Donald Trump was reported to be inside the White House at the time of the incident and was unharmed.
The incident unfolded when Best approached a White House security checkpoint and reportedly pulled a gun from his bag before opening fire.
Secret Service agents returned fire, wounding Best. He was transported to GW Medical Center, where he later died, according to Fox News.
Authorities confirmed that one civilian bystander was injured in the shooting, though their identity and condition have not been released.
The reports gathered revealed that no Secret Service personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
Officials further revealed that Nasire Best had history of encounters with the Secret Service, including making threats and attempting to enter a restricted area in June of the previous year.
He was also reported to have a history of mental health issues while the deadly confrontation led to a brief lockdown of the White House.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the shooting and whether President Trump was an intended target.
