The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has issued strong rebuttal against a “misleading, alarmist write-up” circulating online, which falsely claims the scheme is a “death trap” and that graduates are being “sold to bandits.”

The NYSC management expressed serious concern over the publication, emphasizing that such falsehoods undermine public confidence and national security.

In a detailed statement, the NYSC categorically denied the existence of any “ransom clause” within its Act, Bye-laws, or official publications, labeling the claim as “entirely fictitious.”

The Scheme highlighted commitment to welfare and safety of Corps members and staff, citing a long-standing Memorandum of Understanding with Capital Express Assurance Limited since 2004, which provides life insurance coverage for all Corps Members.

This coverage extends up to three weeks post-service and includes enrollment under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The NYSC also revealed that it has expended over ₦500 million on urgent medical interventions for Corps Members nationwide in the last five years, demonstrating its practical commitment to their well-being.
Addressing security concerns, which it acknowledged as a broader national challenge, the NYSC affirmed its close collaboration with relevant security agencies.

It stated that Corps Members posted to high-risk areas receive adequate security arrangements, including military escorts. “This proactive measure has consistently implemented since 2024 in the North West and even earlier in parts of the North East”.

Furthermore, the Scheme has relocated orientation camps in states like Kebbi, Kaduna, Kwara, Borno, Gombe, and Plateau to safer locations to ensure the protection of both Corps Members and camp officials.
Regarding the unfortunate incident involving Mr. Musa Usman Abba, the NYSC extended its empathy to his family but clarified that Abba is not a serving Corps Member, having completed his national service in 2023.

The Scheme denounced any attempt to link his situation to the NYSC as inaccurate and a misrepresentation of facts.

The NYSC urged media practitioners, stakeholders, and the general public to verify information from credible sources before publication, warning against the dangers of circulating unverified content and its potential to undermine national institutions and erode trust.

While concluding, the Scheme reiterated its dedication to fostering national unity, youth development, and nation-building, vowing to continue prioritizing the safety and welfare of Corps Members across Nigeria.
