The Nigerian Air Force conducted a precision counter-terrorism airstrike
on April 11, 2026, targeting confirmed terrorist strongholds in the Jilli axis of Borno State, a region identified as a major insurgent corridor.

While the Federal Government asserts the operation was intelligence-led and aimed at disrupting Boko Haram and ISWAP activities, it has expressed deep regret over the loss of civilian lives and ordered a full, independent investigation into the incident.

The strike, carried out under Operation HADIN KAI, focused on the Jilli axis, known locally as “Kasu Daulaye” (the terrorists’ market).

This area has long been recognized as an insurgent- controlled enclave, utilized by Boko Haram and ISWAP operatives for collecting levies, procuring supplies, and coordinating attacks.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement released emphasized that the
area had been designated a high-risk zone with clear security advisories restricting civilian presence.

Reinforcing the intelligence that led to the airstrike, a 15-year-old ISWAP courier, Tijjani, was apprehended on April 12, 2026, in Ngamdu.
Tijjani confessed to moving funds and logistics between Jilli, other locations, underscoring the extensive terrorist network operating in the region and their exploitation of minors.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum further corroborated these claims, stating that Jilli and Gazabure markets had been officially closed five years prior due to insurgent control, confirming the area as a known hub for terrorist operations.

Prior to the April 11 strike, the Bindul‒Jilli axis had been a consistent flashpoint for terrorist activities. In January 2026, the Army troops suffered casualties from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack along the route.
Additionally, coordinated attacks in Ngamdu and Benisheikh on April 9 were linked to the same network, prompting weeks of surveillance that culminated in the precision strike.

The Federal Government has extended its deepest condolences to the families of those affected and sympathizes with the injured, reiterating that every Nigerian life is sacred.

To ensure accountability and address any operational gaps, a full and independent investigation has been launched.
The government is also collaborating with the Borno and Yobe State Govts, along with NEMA and SEMA, to provide humanitarian support to affected families and strengthen operational safeguards.

In light of the incident, civilians are urged to strictly observe security advisories, avoid restricted zones, and cooperate with security agencies.

The Federal Government also called
on the media to exercise responsibility in reporting security matters, cautioning against unverified reporting that could mislead the public, embolden terrorists, and undermine national efforts.
Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, recently highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to combating terrorism, citing 386 convictions from 508 terrorismrelated cases.

Also, includes sentences up to life imprisonment for Boko Haram, the ISWAP suspects. The 48 individuals and entities list linked to terrorism financing has also been published.

The Federal Govt remains resolute in its commitment to defeating terrorism and banditry, pledging the greater precision, accountability, and sustained action until lasting peace is achieved in the North-East.

It stressed that tragic incidents would not be exploited to weaken the national resolve or undermine the mission of the Armed Forces.
