The United States has intensified its pressure on Iran, announcing sweeping sanctions against a vast illicit shipping network controlled by Mohammad
Hossein Shamkhani.

This move, detailed in a U.S. Department of State press statement on July 14, 2026, comes amidst escalating tensions and what the U.S. describes as Iran’s “unlawful attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz”.

The U.S. Treasury Department, in consultation with the State Department, designated over 50 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to Shamkhani’s network.

This action aims to disrupt and degrade a critical enabler of Iran’s oil exports, which Washington asserts allows the Iranian regime to profit while its citizens suffer.

Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, often described as an Iranian oil magnate, has been a central figure in facilitating Iran’s oil trade, particularly in circumventing international sanctions.

His network reportedly utilizes a complex web of Iranian and foreign nationals, firms, and offshore shell companies to conduct sanctions-evasion schemes and recover proceeds from sanctioned goods.

The sanctions are imposed pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13902, which grants authority to target key sectors of Iran’s economy.

This latest action follows a series of
escalating events in the region, including renewed Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent the U.S. military strikes on Iranian targets on July 7, 2026.

Iran has vehemently condemned the U.S. actions, with its Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, reportedly stating that the U.S. has announced a naval blockade targeting Iran despite China’s opposition.

Iranian officials have also indicated that the U.S. violated previous agreements, leading to renewed fighting over the Strait of Hormuz.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, claimed on July 11, 2026, that the U.S. violated a memorandum of understanding between the two countries.

The U.S. maintains that it will continue to use all available tools to hold the Iranian regime accountable for its actions and to curb its destabilizing activities in the region.

The ongoing confrontation highlights the deep-seated disagreements and the fragile security situation surrounding one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints.
