The Federal Government has commissioned a new 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation in Lagos, increasing the facility’s total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA.

The upgrade, which replaces the substation’s ageing 30MVA transformer, is expected to provide an additional 80MW of bulk power to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) for onward distribution to consumers across its franchise area.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe described the project as a strategic investment in one of Lagos State’s most important administrative, commercial and industrial corridors.

Tegbe formally commissioned the transformer on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government.

He said the Alausa axis supports government institutions, businesses, factories, markets, hospitals, schools and residential communities whose activities depend heavily on reliable electricity.

“The significance is beyond another engineering project milestone,” Tegbe said, adding that the intervention was designed to strengthen power supply to the “nerve centre of governance in Lagos State” and unlock economic activity.

The minister said the project formed part of the Tinubu administration’s broader plan to identify transmission bottlenecks, expand constrained substations and replace ageing equipment across the country.

He acknowledged that Nigeria’s transmission challenges would not be resolved by a single project, but pledged continued investment in critical infrastructure.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the transformer was delivered by Shanghai Electric Group under a World Bank-funded initiative that began in January 2021.

According to Abdulaziz, the project is expected to deliver more stable and reliable electricity to at least 70,000 residents in Alausa and surrounding communities through IKEDC.

He added that the increased capacity would also improve the quantity of bulk power available to distribution load centres and reinforce the stability of the national grid.

The TCN chief described the project as evidence of the company’s commitment to building a stronger transmission network capable of transporting Nigeria’s growing electricity supply to distribution companies nationwide.

The commissioning was attended by officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator, IKEDC, the Lagos State Government, the World Bank and Shanghai Electric Group.
