As Nigerians look forward to the end bad governance protest, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has urged all groups planning to participate in the proposed nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.
Egbetokun, made this statement released in Abuja on Friday while addressing journalists. This he said, is to ensure the protest is peaceful.
It would be recalled that the All Workers Convergence (AWC) have called on Nigerians through the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze in a statement on Monday,
Describing the planned protest as against bad governance, hunger and insecurity scheduled to hold on 1st August, 2024 and to address other critical national issues.
While worthy to note that a report of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting ICIR, dated April 15th, 2024 recorded that, for tenth consecutive time since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, Nigeria’s headline inflation rose to 33.2 per cent in March 2024.
Additional findings showed that the inflation rate is the highest nation has recorded since March 1996.
This is in consonance with why the AWC have declared that anyone who is kicking against the planned protest against hunger in the country is an enemy of the people.
Saying that the protest become necessary in view of the challenges Nigerians are currently passing through at this period.
The call for details submission came after human rights activist Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa notified the police and Department of State Services, DSS, requesting protection for a group known as Take It Back Movement.
Egbetokun however, acknowledged the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest.
