Encomiums have been showered on Nigeria’s Super Falcons for defeating the co-hosts, Matildas of Australia 3-2 on Thursday at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage.
Goals from Uchenna Kalu, Osinachi Ohale, and substitute Asisat Oshoala completed a come-from-behind win over the World 7th ranked Australians.
It was reported that Australia scored first through Emily Van Egmond in the first minute of additional time in the first half but Kanu equalised in the sixth minute of additional time.
Ohale was brave in giving the Falcons the lead in the 65th minute and Oshoala rose from the bench to give the Nigerian women a 3-1 lead in the 72nd minute after a defensive mix-up between Cortnee Vine and Mackenzie Arnold.
The pulsating match lasted beyond the 90 minutes regulation time by 11 minutes extra time, while Nigerian team will face Republic of Ireland on 31st of july in another face off.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons made the first African Team to win at this year’s World cup, they are top on Group B.

“Congratulations to our girls for earning a hard-fought three points against the Australian Matildas, who were the bookies’ favourite for the match.
“We are proud of our girls and will be rooting for them as they go for another victory in their next game against Ireland, and secure a place in the knockout phases of the Women World Cup”, the Governor said.
