Gaza: Last flour mill hit as Agencies rejects ‘safe zone’

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has said that the Salam Mill in Deir al Balah was reportedly hit and destroyed in Gaza on Wednesday.

United Nations Spokesman disclosed this at the Press Briefing on Thursday adding that this flour mill was the last functioning mill in Gaza, and its destruction means that locally produced flour will not be available in Gaza in the foreseeable future. 

He stated further that yesterday, Gaza’s telecom companies announced the gradual cessation of all communication and internet services in the Strip, following exhaustion of fuel reserves to operate generators. 

Also, the Humanitarian agencies and first responders have warned that blackouts jeopardize the provision of life-saving services.

The Spokesman briefed further that the Interagency Standing Committee, which includes the heads of the UN humanitarian system and large international non- governmental organizations.

“On Thursday issued a statement saying that the humanitarian agencies won’t participate in the establishment of any “safe zone” in Gaza that is set up without the agreement of all the parties.

He added that unless fundamental conditions are in place to ensure that safety and other essential needs are met and a mechanism is in place to supervise its implementation.

UN Spokesman said, the Agencies pressed further added that, under the prevalent conditions, proposals to unilaterally create “safe zones” in Gaza risk creating harm for civilians, including large-scale loss of life, and must be rejected.

It was reported that many civilians have been killed and injured as a result of the Israeli bombardment of a house Jabr near the new market in Nuseirat camp in the central in Gaza Strip late night of Thursday.
