Kenya: Heartbeat of new Multilateralism: UN’s first net-zero building

In a landmark event on Monday, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stood alongside President William Ruto in Nairobi to mark a transformative milestone for the continent and the world.

The inauguration of new office buildings and the groundbreaking of a state-of- the-art conference facility at the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNION), represent more than just physical expansion; signal a profound shift in global governance.

Nairobi is no longer viewed as a distant outpost but has been solidified as a central pillar of the United Nations—the only headquarters in the Global South and a dynamic hub where global challenges meet African-led solutions.

The expansion project is a blueprint for the future of sustainable development. The new offices are UNON’s first net-zero buildings, powered entirely by on-site solar energy.

As the complex grows, it aims for total energy neutrality by 2030, complemented by the restoration of the indigenous dry upland forest, with thousands of trees already taking root.

This “green” campus will soon feature a modern amphitheater carved into African soil, capable of hosting 9,000 delegates, ensuring that the voices of civil society and the public are integrated into the highest levels of international diplomacy.
Beyond the architecture, the Secretary- General’s message was a clarion call for global justice, addressing the “double victimhood” of Africa—first through the direct suffering of colonialism through a legacy of infrastructure designed for extraction rather than connection.

Guterres emphasized that Africa’s potential is currently being throttled by an “unjust and unequal” international system.

He specifically condemned the staggering disparity in borrowing costs, where African nations often pay three times more than developed countries for the same development loans, despite having solid financial outlooks.
To rectify these historical imbalances, the Secretary-General demanded a seat at the table for Africa within the essential institutions of global governance.

He asserted that there can be no true justice without permanent African membership in the UN Security Council and a fair share of influence within the IMF and World Bank.

By bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves, the expansion in Nairobi stands as a testament to the organization’s commitment to a “transformational Africa strategy” that finally leaves the colonial legacy behind.
