Oyewo’s family confirmed his demise, with his son, Adetoyese Oyewo, sharing a heartfelt tribute that resonated deeply across the nation.

A Life Dedicated to the Arts and Academia

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo’s journey into the performing arts began in 1964 when he joined the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group.

This marked the beginning of a distinguished career spanning over six decades, during which he became one of the most revered figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian film.

His remarkable talent and commanding stage presence earned him widespread acclaim.

Dr. Oyewo was particularly celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s classic play, “The Gods Are Not to Blame,” a role that garnered significant recognition across the African theatre scene.

He also left an indelible mark with his
performance as King Lapite in the timeless political drama “Saworoide,” which remains one of Nigerian cinema’s most celebrated works.

His extensive filmography includes
other notable productions such as Sango, Koseegbe, O Le Ku, Efunsetan Aniwura, and Super Story.

Beyond his acting prowess, Dr. Oyewo was a dedicated academic. He pursued higher education, earning a certificate in dramatic arts and Yoruba oral literature at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he later completed a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts in 1995.

His academic pursuits continued at the University of Ibadan, where he obtained both a Master of Arts and a doctorate degree in drama.

Dr Oyewo served as a senior lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University before contributing his expertise to Redeemer’s University and Elizade University, mentoring countless students and shaping future generations of performers and scholars.

In his later years, Dr. Oyewo openly discussed his health challenges, particularly his battle with prostate enlargement while used his platform to raise awareness and encourage early screening among men, demonstrating his commitment to public well-being beyond the arts.

loss, we are grateful to God for the gift of his life, the memories we shared, and the legacy he leaves behind”.

Fellow actor Kunle Afod also confirmed the news via an Instagram post, stating, “Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow.

“His remarkable talent, timeless performances, immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on”.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his deep sorrow, describing Dr. Oyewo as “a legendary thespian and scholar of African drama.”

Atiku noted that Oyewo’s death “has created a significant vacuum in the theatre community” and that his impact extended beyond Nigeria, earning him admiration worldwide.

The Obafemi Awolowo University also mourned the loss of a theatre icon, acknowledging Oyewo’s profound contributions to the arts and culture.
