Liberia elections generally competitive, transparent – EU says

The European Union Commission has now published its preliminary statement, in which it observes that the Liberia elections that was held on October 10, 2023 were generally competitive and transparent.

In a statement released by the Commission on Friday stated that the key stakeholders have fulfilled their pledge to promote a peaceful election environment.

According to the Commission, “The people of Liberia shown a strong commitment to democracy in the peaceful general elections held on 10 October as well as throughout the process.

The elections took place in a calm environment with Liberians showing up in good numbers on election day”, the European Union mission said.

The statement further said that following an invitation from the Government of Liberia, the EU deployed an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) throughout the country.

While the European Union mission has now published its preliminary statement, in which it observes that elections were generally competitive and transparent. “Official results of the elections are expected within the next two weeks”.

It noted that the European Union Observation Mission will remain in Liberia until the end of the electoral period and will then publish a final report and recommendations for improvements of the electoral framework.

Meanwhile, report has it that provisional results of October 10th Liberia’s presidential elections have begun to rolling in as the two top candidates, President George Weah of Coalition for Democratic Change and his rival Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party are pulling votes from their strongholds.

It further said that as of when this report was filed, both Liberian men, who believe they will secure a first- round victory, would have to wait for a few more days as results come in to know who will become Liberia’s next president.
