UN Agencies buries unidentified bodies at Al Shifa Hospital, Gaza

The United Nations Agencies have supported the Gaza’s Health Ministry to organise dignified burials for the unidentified bodies found on Al-Shifa Hospital premises.

In a Press Briefing on Tuesday, the UN Spokesman who disclosed this said it was not reported how many were the bodies but stated that these bodies were previously lying under dirt or plastic sheeting, and were given fuller burials on site or at a nearby area.

According to him, “Turning to the situation in Gaza, our colleagues from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) tell us that yesterday, OCHA and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as other agencies, assisted with the organization of dignified burials for unidentified bodies at Al Shifa Hospital, and that follows the end of the Israeli siege there last week.

He added, “The UN Mine Action Services and UN Department for Safety and Security also supported Gaza’s Health Ministry with proper burials, either onsite or nearby.

Earlier, WHO Director-General, Dr Tedro Ghebreyesus who had reported this on his social media platforms said his Organisation, UNOCHA, UNMAS and UNDSS supported the Gaza’s Health Ministry Monday in organising dignified burials for the unidentified bodies on Al-Shifa Hospital premises.

He said, “The bodies were previously lying under dirt or plastic sheeting, and were given fuller burials on site or at the nearby area. When the dead are buried properly, they can be identified later by forensic examinations, giving loved ones some consolation”.

Report has it that after Israeli military forces withdrawn from the hospital which was on 14-day siege. Injured and dead bodies filled the hospital grounds. Bodies buried in the hospital yards, according to a civil defense spokesperson while the hospital completely destroyed and burned down.
