As Muslims around the world begin observing holy month of Ramadan, this March, 2023, the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has called for peace, mutual respect and solidarity across nations.

In his video message to begin the Ramadan fast, the UN Chief said this is moment of reflection and learning. “A time to come together in a spirit of understanding and compassion, bound by our common humanity”.

He added that it’s also time for the mission of the United Nations to foster dialogue, unity and peace. “In these challenging times, my thoughts are with those facing conflict, displacement and suffering”.

The Secretary-General joined everyone observing Ramadan to call for peace, mutual respect and solidarity. Let us take inspiration from this holy month and build a more just and equitable world for all”, he said.

Muslims around the world anticipate the holy month of Ramadan every year. For the 1.6 billion Muslims around the world, the month marks a time of deep spirituality and an opportunity to better themselves

During this month, worshippers will abstain from all forms of food and drink during the daylight hours, breaking their fast at sunset. Engage in additional acts of worship, from giving more to charity to taking part in more prayers and reading of the holy book, the Quran.
