The United States has said that the vote at United Nation General Assembly on Monday which it described as remarkable, is powerful reminder that the overwhelming majority of nations stand with Ukraine.
Secretary of State, Antony Blinken who made this known in a statement after the vote, said the vote delivers a resounding rebuke to Russia for its aggression against Ukraine.
The overwhelming vote at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday noticed 143 international locations condemned Russia’s try and annex 4 areas of Ukraine.
Blinken noted that the territorial integrity is a central pillar of the United Nations, and Russia’s violent contempt for Ukraine’s national borders and sovereignty cannot and will not be accepted.
According to him, “By adopting this resolution, the assembled nations made clear: they will not tolerate an attempt by any UN Member State to seize land by force”.
He added that United States is proud to have voted in favor of this resolution. “As we have stated repeatedly, we will defend the principles of the UN charter and will never recognize the legitimacy of sham referenda or Russia’s attempts to annex portions of Ukraine.
“With very few nations voting with Russia today, it is clear that international unity on this question is resolute and support for Ukraine at the UN and beyond is unwavering.
“The United States will continue to work with partners across the globe to support Ukraine’s people in defending their nation in its entirety against Russia’s aggression”, he said.
Meanwhile, the 193-member U.N General Assembly voted on Monday to reject Russia’s request that it take a secret vote this week on whether to condemn Moscow’s attempt to annex four partially occupied regions of Ukraine.
With 107 votes in favor, the General Assembly agreed to hold a public vote rather than a secret one on a draft law condemning Russia’s “illegal so-called referenda” and the “attempted illegal annexation.”
On Monday, just 13 nations rejected a vote in public on the resolution draught, 39 nations were quiet, and the rest did not participate.
Because of Western lobbying, Russia has maintained that a secret ballot was required because “it may be very difficult if positions are expressed publicly.”
Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia are the four partially occupied regions in Ukraine that Moscow has moved to annex after staging what it referred to as referendums.
The voting has been criticized as being unlawful and coerced by Ukraine and its allies.
