The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has reiterated that police actions must be conducted within the ambit of the law, ensuring the safety and security of all citizens during the upcoming planned protests in the country.

Egbetokun, in light of recent intelligence reports on the planned protests coming up on 1st August, held emergency meeting on Saturday with tactical commanders of Police to emphasize principles of professionalism and adherence to the rule of law in managing public demonstrations.

According to the statement released by the Force stating that the tactical commanders comprising leaders of units of Police Mobile Force (PMF), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Special Protection Unit (SPU) converged at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The IGP underscored the importance of maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, while reminded officers that the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right and it’s imperative that the police ensure these protests do not escalate into violence in light of recent intelligence.
Egbetokun who ordered the strategic deployment of police forces across the nation, also directed all commanders to withdraw officers from extra-policing services to ensure all squadrons.

Also, bases are fully prepared to provide immediate support to their respective state commands to prevent any escalation of violence and manage protests effectively, ensuring the protection of lives and property.
He also emphasized that the safety of police officers is paramount and urged them to protect themselves and employ proactive measures in maintaining order while ensuring the protection of the public.

The IGP equally called on all members of the public to view Police as strategic partners in maintaining peace and security, encouraging them to support the police in their efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Report gathered that the planned protests, scheduled for August 1-10, 2024, have been a subject of discussion among Nigerians over the past week, although no group has claimed responsibility as the organisers of the protest but projected against high cost of living, security among other issues.
