UNESCO: 33 Journalists killed in Palestine since October 2023

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported the deaths of at least 33 Journalists and media workers in the line of work in Palestine since October 2023, which do not include the one in circumstances unreated to their
profession.

In a statement released by the Agency recently, as the Director-General, Audrey Azoulay condemned killings of journalists, Ismail Al Ghoul and Ramy Al Refee, in Gaza City, Palestine on 31st July 2024.

According to him, “I condemn the killings of Ismail Al Ghoul and Ramy Al Refee. With every journalist killed, Gaza strip becomes more and more a zone of silence, with severe consequences for access to information”.
The Agency also said its monitoring attacks and threats against journalists while noted that in recent months, multiple journalists covering protests in different parts of the world been subjected to various forms of attacks, including killings, injuries, arbitrary detentions.

UNESCO recalled that all authorities concerned have the duty and responsibility to ensure the safety of journalists covering protests around the world, in accordance with international norms and human rights obligations.
The Agency who has been promoting safety of journalists through gobal awareness- raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the United Nation Plan of Actionon the Safety of Journalists and the
Issue of Impunity.

The 2024 UNESCO/Guillermo World Press Freedom Prize was awarded to Palestinan journalists covering Gaza, paying tribute to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression.
