Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party and the former Governor of Anambra State, issued a stinging rebuke of the current administration’s response to the country’s worsening security crisis.

In a statement released on social media platforms on Monday, Obi called out the government’s apparent indifference as armed groups escalate their attacks, spreading fear and devastation across Nigeria.

A Nation Under Siege

The ex-governor’s reaction follow a series of distressing events, most notably in the Ngoshe of Borno State, where insurgents reportedly overwhelmed security forces, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers and the abduction of more than 100 women and children.

“Our nation is clearly under, what can only be described as, a state of siege,” Obi stated. “The scale of insecurity is becoming unbearable, reaching into every corner of our land.

“This week alone, we have witnessed tragedies that should monopolize the attention of our leaders, yet there is only a deafening silence.”

Humanitarian Crisis and Widespread Fear

Obi highlighted the expanding reach of the violence, pointing to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as an area of increasing concern.
He cited the recent abductions in Kubwa, where nearly 20 people were taken from their homes, as proof that no one is truly safe.

“The humanitarian consequences are equally alarming, with thousands of displaced persons in states like Kogi, Nasarawa and Benue facing a crisis of neglect. The response from those in power is inexcusable,” Obi remarked.

“It is as if Nigerian lives no longer matter. The ruling class appears far more preoccupied with the next election than with saving the lives of the people they were elected to protect.”
A Call for Accountability and Hope

Peter Obi’s reaction also paid tribute to the bravery of the Nigerian military, with him calling for greater respect and support for those in uniform.

He said, “I look forward to the day when our fallen heroes are given the dignified burials they deserve, with their services and sacrifices honored by the nation’s highest leadership”.

In his concluding remarks, Obi re-affirmed his commitment to a better future for the country. “Nigerians deserve leadership that puts their safety and welfare above all else,” he stated. “It is time to restore security, dignity, and hope to every corner of this nation. A New Nigeria is Possible.”
