The Nigerian Federal Government is championing a strategic and unified communication framework to significantly enhance national security coordination, a move lauded by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

This initiative, highlighted during a recent courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, underscores the government’s commitment to a cohesive approach in combating terrorism and banditry.

Idris emphasized the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration, stating, “The Federal Government believes that through interactions amongst ministries and departments of government.

“A strategic and unified communication framework can evolve that will boost the coordination of security actions in the fight against terrorism and banditry.”

He further explained that his ministry is actively engaging with various govt agencies to ensure that Nigerians are well-informed about govt initiatives and their positive impact on national development.

This proactive engagement aims to align communication strategies across ministries, fostering a unified national narrative.
The visit also aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Information and National Orientation and the Ministry of Interior, particularly in communicating crucial reforms related to immigration services, visa processes, and other critical areas.

Effective communication of government policies, according to Minister Idris, is vital for building public understanding, strengthening national confidence, and projecting a positive image of Nigeria internationally.

He stressed the necessity of coordinated national messaging on security and governance to counter misinformation and ensure citizens receive accurate information.
In response, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, affirmed the indispensable nature of collaboration between the two ministries for the effective dissemination of govt policies and reforms, especially concerning citizenship, immigration management, and national security.

“Collaboration between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Information is necessary and extremely important for appropriate information dissemination,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated.

He highlighted significant reforms undertaken by the Ministry of Interior under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, particularly within the Nigerian Immigration Service.

These achievements include the swift clearance of a passport backlog of 204,332 applications within two and a half weeks of the administration taking office in 2023, effectively ending an era of passport scarcity.
The Minister also noted the introduction of contactless passport renewal for Nigerians in the diaspora, deployment of advanced technology for border management, modernizing immigration processes and improving service delivery both domestically and abroad.

To further showcase these advancements, the Interior Minister extended an invitation to the Ministry of Information and National Orientation for a project tour of major reforms and infrastructure developments across agencies under the Ministry of Interior, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The meeting saw the presence of senior officials from both ministries, including Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior; Barr Henshaw Ogubike, Director, Public Communication.

Also, Dr. Suleiman Haruna, Director Public Relations and Protocol; and Senior Advisers from the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, alongside Directors and management staff of the Ministry of Interior.
