President Bola Tinubu’s administration has expanded access to education, strengthened technical training and widened student support, according to a 2026 report cited by All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council.

The Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative report said the reforms have affected basic, secondary, technical and tertiary education, with more than ₦372.62 billion disbursed through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to 1.66 million student-loan applicants across 319 tertiary institutions. The funds cover tuition and upkeep allowances.

The report also highlighted the return of more than one million out-of-school children to classrooms through the Better Education Service Delivery for All programme. In addition, the AGILE initiative has reached 7.19 million girls, including 3.7 million enrolled in secondary schools.

Technical and vocational education has also recorded significant growth. More than 2.8 million people applied for the government’s TVET programme, while 156,446 verified trainees received free training, monthly stipends and start-up support.

The government has disbursed ₦65.7 billion to trainees, provided ₦30.2 billion to training centres and rehabilitated 38 technical colleges.

The administration has further allocated ₦3.52 trillion to education in the 2026 budget and secured $552 million for the HOPE-EDU programme, which targets 29 million children, 500,000 teachers and 65,000 public schools.

Teacher development has also featured prominently in the reforms. More than 53,000 teachers have registered under the EduRevamp programme.

While nearly 52,000 joined the first cohort of the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway, a six-month initiative offering professional qualifications, certification and licensing.

In tertiary education, the government says it has resolved the long-running dispute with the Academic Staff Union of Universities and implemented a 40 per cent increase in academic staff remuneration.

It has also released ₦28 billion in support loans to 15,000 workers across 153 public institutions.

The reforms extend to medical and science education. The Federal Government is investing ₦110 billion to rehabilitate 18 federal medical schools, while nursing enrolment rose from 81,480 in 2023 to 114,300 in 2025.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the success of the reforms should be judged by their impact on students, teachers and institutions—not simply by the money allocated or the number of programmes introduced.

“Our measure of success is not merely the amount of money allocated to education or the number of programmes introduced. It is the difference these interventions make in the lives of our children, students, teachers and institutions,” he said.
