The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued warning to the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asserting that his true challenge in the 2027 general elections will be against millions of Nigerians grappling with unprecedented hardship,
rather than the political opposition.

The party’s declaration came in response to President Tinubu’s recent remarks, where he reportedly mocked opposition for holding its convention on the street and expressed no fear of their challenge.

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC condemned President Tinubu’s comments as unpresidential and indicative of a leader disconnected from the realities faced by the majority of Nigerians.

Abdullahi highlighted the pervasive issues of poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship, contrasting them with the President’s apparent preoccupation with political theatrics.

“What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens,” the statement read.
The ADC emphasized that while families
battle a historic cost of living crisis, food inflation, rising debt burdens, and collapsing purchasing power, President Tinubu chose to ridicule the opposition.

Furthermore, the ADC refuted the President’s assertion that their national convention was held on the street, attributing such claims to misinformation.

The party also criticized the shrinking democratic space under the current administration, citing the denial of access to public venues like Eagle Square for political parties.
The ADC also challenged President
Tinubu’s stance on the separation of powers, arguing that his actions and statements often overstep the boundaries of his office, effectively making him both President and judge.

The statement also touched upon Tinubu’s perceived hypocrisy in attempting to align himself with supporters of former President Muhammadu Buhari, after years of
distancing himself and blaming the previous administration for current failures.

The ADC concluded by reiterating its focus on building a credible alternative for Nigerians, one anchored on competence, security, prosperity, and democratic freedom, asserting that
“Nigerians deserve better than excuses, propaganda, and power game”.
