In a landmark move set to revolutionize public service delivery and economic inclusion, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) have forged a strategic alliance to integrate the nation’s National Identity Database with its digital postcode system.

This pioneering partnership, announced on Friday in Abuja, aims to create unified framework that connects the National Identification Number (NIN) with verified address data, promising a smarter, more connected Nigeria.

The collaboration is poised to significantly strengthen Nigeria’s digital infrastructure by merging trusted identities with reliable location data.

This integration will empower government agencies, businesses, and service providers to more accurately identify and locate citizens, thereby improving access to essential services such as healthcare, education, financial services, logistics, emergency response, and e-commerce.

Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General and CEO of NIMC, hailed the partnership as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.

She underscored the shared commitment to fostering a citizen-centric ecosystem, emphasizing that identity alone is incomplete without precise location data.

While the NIN establishes who an individual is, the postcode system pinpoints where they can be reached, making this integration indispensable for efficient governance and targeted government programs.

The initiative follows the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026, which expanded NIMC’s mandate to include managing Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for identity and serving as the Root Certification Authority for the National Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

This legal framework provides a secure foundation for digital identity, enabling trusted authentication, electronic signatures, and seamless digital transactions.

Technical teams from both NIMC and NIPOST have already commenced integrating postcode retrieval into NIMC’s NINAuth platform.

Soon, Nigerians will be able to verify their addresses and retrieve official postcodes through this single, trusted identity platform, streamlining access and convenience.

Tola Odeyemi, Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, echoed the sentiment, describing the partnership as a foundational step towards a smarter and more connected Nigeria.

She highlighted that modern economies rely on two critical capabilities: knowing who people are and knowing where they are. While identity grants access to
services, the postcode system provides the crucial directional data for efficient logistics, planning, emergency response, and government interventions.
