Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare, security, and overall well-being of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the State.
Describing them as crucial partners in
the government’s development agenda, Ododo made this assurance during a meeting with the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, at the Govt House in Lokoja.
The Governor expressed confidence in Brigadier General Nafiu’s leadership, anticipating that his tenure would be marked by reforms that strengthening the NYSC Scheme and enhance its contributions to national development.
He pledged to continue providing a
safe, secure, and conducive environment for Corps members throughout their service year, emphasizing that security of all residents and visitors, including Corps members, remains a top priority.
Demonstrating a hands-on approach, Governor Ododo revealed that he had personally visited the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Asaya on multiple occasions to assess its condition.
He highlighted his administration’s preference for firsthand evaluation over sole reliance on reports. In line with this, he announced comprehensive plans for the renovation and upgrade of the orientation camp, aiming to transform it into one of the best in the country.
Consultants have already been engaged, and architectural designs are currently being prepared.
Addressing the issue of monthly state allowances for Corps members, Ododo expressed surprise and dissatisfaction that payments had not been sustained.
He immediately directed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development to collaborate with relevant government officials to review the matter and ensure prompt action, underscoring that Corps members deserve adequate support and encouragement.
Furthermore, the Governor appealed to the NYSC to deploy more teachers and medical doctors to Kogi State to bolster service delivery in critical sectors.
He noted that attractive incentives, including special allowances for medical personnel, have been introduced to improve healthcare across the state.
Hon. Monday Aridaojo Anyebe, Chairman of the Kogi State NYSC Governing Board and Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, commended Governor Ododo for prioritizing Corps members’ welfare.
He cited the recent inauguration of the State NYSC Governing Board as a landmark achievement and praised the Governor’s consistent commitment through improved welfare packages, transportation support, enhanced camp
feeding, and timely intervention in infrastructure challenges.
Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the NYSC Director General, reciprocated the
commendation, acknowledging Governor Ododo’s steadfast support in security, infrastructure, and Corps members’ welfare.
He affirmed Kogi as one of the safest states for Corps members, noting that all 21 local government areas currently host Corps members due to the government’s effective security architecture.
The Director General also appealed
for continued collaboration between the state government and the NYSC to further enhance service delivery and the welfare of Corps members.
