Nigeria is set to become the centre of a global conversation on peace and security as the Muslim World League, in collaboration with Jama’atu Izalatil Bidiah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah, convenes an international security conference in Abuja on Today, August 11, 2026.
Taking place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, the gathering will bring together religious leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to examine the vital connection between peace, security and socio-economic development.
It will also seek to deepen dialogue and mutual understanding among Muslims, Christians and people of other faiths.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the conference on Monday during the inauguration of a newly constructed mosque in Abuja by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, Secretary General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Islamic Scholars.
Idris described Sheikh Al-Issa’s visit as a reflection of the strong ties between Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and the wider international community.
He said the conference comes at a crucial moment as Nigeria strengthens its security architecture and pursues reforms and investments designed to accelerate national development.
Reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to religious harmony and national unity, the minister said peace and security were indispensable to Nigeria’s prosperity and stability — and to the future of Africa.
“The President is determined to ensure peace and tranquillity not just in Nigeria, but around the world,” Idris said, describing the conference as evidence of the direction the administration is taking.
He added that Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation, carries a special responsibility to promote peace across the continent. A secure and stable Nigeria, he noted, would have a positive impact on West Africa and Africa as a whole.
For Sheikh Al-Issa, the mission is clear: peace must be built through dialogue. Commending the President’s efforts to strengthen coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims, he said harmony in Nigeria could contribute significantly to stability across West Africa and the wider world.
He expressed confidence that the conference would create a practical platform for religious and community leaders to exchange ideas, confront shared security challenges and advance a culture of understanding.
With senior government officials, lawmakers and traditional and religious stakeholders expected to participate, Abuja’s conference is poised to move beyond speeches — toward a broader, faith-driven effort to make peace a foundation for Nigeria’s development.
