Federal Minister of Works David Umahi has ordered the immediate repair of damaged sections of the Benin–Asaba Expressway, demanding that the road’s concessionaire restore safe and smooth passage for motorists.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin City on 26 August 2026, Umahi condemned what he described as unacceptable deficiencies in the management and execution of the highway project.

He warned that poor construction practices, weak traffic control and failure to follow engineering directives would no longer be tolerated.

The minister directed the Benin–Asaba Expressway Concession Company to reinstate damaged asphalt, clear standing water, remove dust and debris, and create properly marked passages through construction areas.

He stressed that ongoing works must not expose road users to unnecessary hardship or danger.

A technical briefing by the project’s independent engineer identified serious concerns involving pavement quality, drainage and traffic management.

Host communities also reported accidents, flooding and disruptions to local businesses, prompting calls for improved communication and stronger operational guidelines.

The Senate and House committees on Works backed the minister’s position, promising closer oversight and possible sanctions for non-compliance.

They urged the concessionaire to place public safety and community welfare above profit while the concessionaire pledged to implement the required corrective measures.

Umahi, however, insisted that the Federal Government’s goal was not merely to complete the highway, but to deliver a durable national asset built and managed according to approved engineering standards.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo praised the swift intervention, saying Nigerians must not be made to suffer unnecessarily because of construction delays or poor project management.
