The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey transmission line after a powerful rainstorm and windstorm brought down three transmission towers in Kebbi State.
The declaration was contained in a statement signed by TCN management on August 28, 2026.
The line tripped at 5:38 p.m. on August 26, 2026. An attempted trial reclosure at 6:03 p.m. failed when the line tripped again almost immediately.
A patrol team dispatched to locate the fault later discovered that towers T109, T110 and T111 had collapsed at Chibike village, disrupting bulk power transmission to Niamey, Niger Republic.
TCN said it has mobilised personnel and resources to the affected location and is working to rebuild the damaged infrastructure and restore the line to service as quickly as possible.
The company expressed regret over the disruption and assured electricity customers in Niamey that every effort is being made to restore normal power supply promptly.
