The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced rehabilitation works on four vandalised towers along the Afam/IPP/Elelenwo 132kV Double Circuit Transmission Line, while also restoring power at the Apo Transmission Substation in Abuja.

The affected towers—T50, T51, T52 and T53—were found to have suffered the removal of critical bracing members during an inspection on August 6, 2026. The damage compromised their structural integrity and posed a serious threat to reliable electricity transmission along the corridor.

TCN’s Port Harcourt Transmission Region has since mobilised a contractor to carry out urgent repairs. A formal handover ceremony held on September 8 marked the commencement of the rehabilitation project.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of Lines, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Engr. Azuh Lucky, who represented TCN Management, urged residents of Elelenwo and surrounding communities, as well as traditional rulers and the local government chairman, to support the company’s efforts to protect transmission infrastructure.

He stressed that sustained community involvement and vigilance were essential to preventing further vandalism and safeguarding the rehabilitated towers.

In a separate development, TCN announced the restoration of the 100MVA power transformer at the 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation, which tripped earlier in the day. Following comprehensive testing and maintenance, the transformer was returned to service at approximately 7:33 p.m.

The restoration brought the affected 33kV feeders—H31, H33, H35 and H37—back online, fully reinstating bulk power supply to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) customers on the affected feeders.

TCN thanked customers for their patience during the outage and appealed to communities around transmission facilities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. The company reaffirmed its commitment to completing the tower rehabilitation works promptly and ensuring stable, reliable power transmission.
