Canadian Government has expressed concerns over the ongoing conflict in Sudan while allocated over $71 million in humanitarian assistance funding to United Nations, Red Cross and other Non-governmental Organisation NGO partners in the country.

The announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and the Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada.

The conflict in Sudan and its humanitarian impact on the country’s population and those living in the neighbouring countries already struggling as a result of poverty, violence, food insecurity and climate change.

Canada called for conflicting parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and facilitate humanitarian access to allow the provision of critical assistance throughout the country.

The statement further said that Canada’s support will help people meet their basic needs, including by providing food assistance, protection, water, sanitation and hygiene services and health services.

This funding supports ongoing humanitarian efforts in these countries, and is provided on a flexible basis, allowing partners to adapt and scale-up efforts as the situation evolves in and around Sudan”, it added.

Harjit S. Sajjan said, “Canada’s humanitarian partners are on the ground providing assistance in this very complex environment, and we remain in close contact with them to understand needs.

“Canada stands ready to provide additional assistance, as appropriate, and we continue to call for an end to the violence in Sudan and for safe and unrestricted humanitarian access to be allowed throughout the country.”

Canadian Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, Ahmed Hussen also reacted to the development, saying, “Canada stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and those in neighbouring countries affected by this ongoing crisis.

“And we’re committed to helping provide them with the humanitarian assistance they need. We are calling for an immediate end to the violence and will continue to support our humanitarian partners in the region”.
