The Nigeria’s Super Eagles has defeated the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 score line in full play time and extra time at the Stade de la Paix in Cote d’Ivoire.

Super Eagles’ victory over the South African side on Wednesday has qualified Nigeria for the final match of this year’s CAF’s African Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, after almost missing out from group A, when Super Eagles won with 1-0, courtesy of penalty from William Troost- Ekong, the elephants have booked a final date against Nigeria, according to Premium Time report.

Cote d’Ivoire, the AFCON 2024 host, booked their place in the final with a 1-0 win over DR Congo. Sébastien Haller scored the goal that took the Elephants into Sunday’s final against Nigeria.

The Federal Government in its reaction hailed the Super Eagles for their resounding victory over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the semifinals of African Nations Cup, describing their performance as the stuff of legends.

Information and National Orientation Minister, Mohammed Idris who on behalf of government commended the team said through their indomitable spirit in pursuit of victory, the Super Eagles are inches away from clinching the coveted trophy for Nigeria.

Idris said the Super Eagles displayed remarkable talent, determination, and teamwork throughout match, showcasing the true spirit of Nigerian football.

The Minister added that as the Super Eagles look forward to the final match, the nation, and the government stand firmly behind them while expressing confidence in their ability to emerge victorious and bring home the African Nations Cup trophy once again.

Idris said, “The entire nation rallies behind the Super Eagles as they prepare to make history and write their names in gold African and global football”.

The Minister, who called on all Nigerians to continue supporting and cheering the Super Eagles as they strive for greatness in the final match, stressed that the team carries the hopes and aspirations of an entire nation on their shoulders.

The Federal Govt has promised to reward the Super Eagles for their commitment and dedication in reaching the Final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in CIV, according to the team official X handle.

Adding that, Vice President Kashim Shettima who was at the stadium told the players and their officials in the dressing room, following their hard-fought victory over South Africa in the semi finals on Wednesday, that the govt and people of Nigeria are proud of their accomplishment.

Shettima was in company with Governors Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Duoye Diri (Bayelsa), Minister for Youth, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim as well as Oil mogul Wale Tinubu, FIFA Council Member Amaju Pinnick and NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau.
