In a powerful demonstration of unwavering resolve, South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, who is serving as the African Union Champion on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, has spearheaded a critical mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

His visit ignited a renewed continental offensive against the relentless Ebola outbreak, solidifying the continent’s commitment to health security and its determination to conquer this formidable adversary.

Addressing a high-stakes multi- stakeholder engagement, the President delivered a rallying cry, extending profound condolences to the Congolese people and acknowledging the immense sacrifices of the frontline healthcare workers, scientists, humanitarians, and community leaders.

He lauded their indomitable spirit, courage, and selflessness, declaring them the true heroes in this battle. “Africa is one!” Ramaphosa proclaimed, his words echoing the continent’s unified stance.

“Our bonds transcend borders, ethnicity, and language. When tragedy strikes one
part of our beloved continent, we all feel the pain. When a sister country calls for aid, we answer without hesitation.”

The continental response has been nothing short of extraordinary. A pivotal virtual summit, convened by President Ndayishimiye of Burundi on June 16, galvanized an astonishing 1.5 billion US dollars in funding, technical expertise, medical countermeasures, and humanitarian relief.

A remarkable testament to African self-reliance, over 100 million dollars of this monumental sum was pledged by African nations themselves, signaling a
new era of health sovereignty and collaborative action.

South African President, Ramaphosa emphasized the imperative of rigorous resource management, commending the World Health Organization-backed medical supplies tracking dashboard.

This vital tool, coupled with robust inventory and donation coordination mechanisms, will ensure accountability and maximize the impact of every contribution.

Despite the daunting challenges, a beacon of hope shines through. The President highlighted promising advancements in medicines and vaccines, poised to dramatically improve recovery rates.

He laid out a clear action plan: swiftly converting pledges into tangible support, enforcing a ceasefire to guarantee safe passage for aid and medical personnel, and fiercely protecting frontline responders from any threat of fear, stigma, or violence.

South Africa, he affirmed, stands at the forefront of African innovation, actively investing in local manufacturing capabilities. This includes unwavering support for Afrigen, a key player in the urgent quest to develop vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.

Ramaphosa concluded with impassioned call for “unity of purpose, urgency of action, and sustained solidarity” ‒ the bedrock upon which Africa will not only navigate but decisively triumph over this health crisis, once again showcasing its unparalleled resilience.
