To help students weigh their values, interests, aptitudes, abilities and aspirations against those required for various careers, the Anglican Grammar School AGS Okenla, Ifo, Ogun State, Old Students Association AGSOSA on Wednesday organized career talk to equally safeguard the students for future benefits.
The Career programme with the theme: Empower Your Future, Ignite Your Potential and Unleash Your Ambition”, organized for Senior Students SS1 classes with over eight hundred students, sponsored by the 1984 set in preparation for their 40th Anniversary which will be coming soon.
The event had in attendance, the National President of AGSOSA, Funsho A. Onipede, the Ass National Secretary, Charles Afolabi Goriola, Chairman Education Committee, Amosu A., Secretary Education Committee, Olukemi Oladeinde, Facilitator, Mr Dada S. I., Wife, Mrs Dada and Chairman 83 set, Alhaji Lawal Arogundade.
Also, the AGS Vice Principal double as Pioneer AGSOSA National Secretary, Solademi Adetutu, the Principal Senior School, Adeeko A., the Principal Junior School, Ige B.O, Fasina Sakirat 84 set, the Master of Ceremony, Sotunbo Abiodun, Bose Ogunyomi, Atoba Oluseun among others.
Speaking to Media Bypass News at the sideline of the programme, the AGSOSA President, Onipede revealed that this has been part of his manifesto during the election which he discovered it will be helpful to the students, adding that he got inspired after education committee was set up.
Citing an example to prove the importance of the programme, the President who is an ex-Banker said when he was in form 4, around 80s, had no one to guard or advise him on his career path. “I didn’t have anyone and I noticed that nobody was there to advise me or tell me what to do or what subjects to chose.
“I finished my school level and I needed someone to guide me but I could not see anyone, had it been I was well guided I might not be where I am now. Thank God I’m accountant, have worked as a banker and some others financial institution”, the President boasted.
He lamented the low level of the students’ performance after the first batch of the programme. “So I discovered many of this students don’t know anything at the just concluded batch of the programme I was surprised to hear from a student in art class that telling the facilitator he want to study medicine”.
Onipede emphasised that indiscipline has been the way of life of students of nowadays adding that during the olding days, students are more disciplined and God-fearing.
“During the AGM the principal told us many things, school wasn’t like this in the olding days there was discipline, but now, students are loitering around, during our days, school was recognized for two things, first, literally and debate society, and second in sport but all that glory is lost”, he said.
“As AGSOSA National President we want to bring back the past glory, after Methodist High School during the olding days, Anglican Grammar School was next even in academic”, Onipede revealed.
Sharing more light on the programme, the facilitator, Mr Dada equiped the students with inspiration and information to make better -informed decision about their future career paths, allowing them to gain understanding of what different careers actually entail, bringing the curriculum to life.
He urged them to be career oriented, saying being a doctor, Pharmacist, Agriculturist, Engineer are knowledge based careers which requires comprehensive reading and skills based careers requires going to school and learning it as a trade. “You must chose between knowledge and skills based careers”, he advised.
Also speaking, the Chairman Education Committee, Mr Amosu explained that during their time such opportunity were not giving to them (in the early 80s). “We were focused and disciplined”. He mentioned how their teachers directed them to get past questions which took him to WAEC office in Abeokuta, so as to have the idea or to learn.
The chairman who was once a teacher expressed optimistic that none from the students mentioned teaching as a career paths they are willing to embark on, saying teaching to him is not a profession but a career because anybody can come into teaching and such person will be giving the opportunity.
He advised the students to assimilate whatever they were taught, encouraged them to make some jolting, adding that this will guide them in their career paths. “Go back home, go through what you’ve jolted which will guard you. Some of you are in the wrong class now, if you feel that the class you are now, you can’t cope, please change”, he said.
The AGSOSA Assistant National Secretary in his words begged these students to make use of this opportunity giving to them while appealed to female students to avoid being deceived by male seniors in fooling them into bed, according to him, “they’ll spoil your life, don’t be deceived”, he warned.
Also, one of the student said he has learnt alot from the career talk, adding that this has given her the opportunity to know how to prepare herself for her career path, she also expressed gratitude to the organisers, the facilitator for this great enlightenment.
Another student whose name is Soyinka Ayomide Joseph said he enjoyed the career talk, “this has giving us the privilege to chose our career paths, some students who doesn’t know how to go about their careers have been enlightened. I say a big thank you to the organisers and the facilitator of the noble event”, Soyinka said.
Giving the votes of thanks, the Secretary Education Committee, Mrs Oladeinde appreciated the AGSOSA for organizing this career programme, expressed gratitude to the sponsor of the event class of 84, she prayed for everyone that were present for taking their time to attend the programme.
