Al-Hol: US welcomes Spain’s repatriation of nationals from Syria

The United States has welcomed the repatriation by Government of Spain, two women and thirteen children from displaced persons camps in northeast Syria. 

In a statement released by the States Department Spokesman, Ned Price on Wednesday, as the US grateful to Spain for working together to resolve ongoing humanitarian crisis resulting from the dismantlement of the so-called ISIS “caliphate” by the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS/Daesh.

Report has it that two of the Spanish women who are wives and widows of Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists who had been interned in detention camps under the control of Kurdish militias in northern Syria arrived in Spain on Monday evening.



According repatriation report, two women and 13 children arrived at Torrejón de Ardoz military airport in Madrid, while added that family members were not allowed to approach and communication problems prevented the third Spanish woman repatriation.

The United States stated further that approximately 10,000 residents of al-Hol and Roj displaced persons camps are from more than 60 countries outside Syria and Iraq. “More than half of all al-Hol camp residents are children under the age of 12”, according to the statement.

It stressed further that repatriation is the only durable solution to the humanitarian and security situation in al-Hol. 

While its so-called “caliphate” has been defeated, ISIS remains a persistent threat to the region and to the thousands of vulnerable residents in displaced persons camps. 

United States urged all governments to follow Spain’s example, repatriate their nationals, especially women and children.



Meanwhile, according to report, the two women names are Yolanda Martínez, age 37, and Luna Fernández, age 34 while travelled with 13 minors.

It further stated that Yolanda Martínez has four children, Luna Fernández is the mother of five children. Her eldest, aged 15, was separated from his mother and committed to a correctional institution.  

According to the families’ lawyer, the two women have been arrested. They must have made statement to the police on Tuesday before going to court while the children have already been placed with social services.
