In a dramatic and chaotic start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the South Africa Bafana Bafana’s opening match against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca ended in a 2-0 defeat, marked by a historic disciplinary meltdown.

While the result was a bitter pill for
South African fans, the government has called for national unity, urging the team to “press on” despite the setback.

The match, which kicked off the expanded 48-team tournament, was defined by three red cards—the most in a World Cup opening match in history.

Sphephelo Sithole was the first to be
sent off in the 49th minute, followed by the veteran Themba Zwane in the 84th minute, leaving Bafana Bafana with only nine men on the pitch.

South Africa’s discipline crumbled as the pressure of the occasion mounted and Mexico also finished with ten men after César Montes received a straight red in stoppage time for a professional foul.

Mexico took an early lead through Julián Quiñones in the 9th minute, and veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the advantage in 67th minute, capitalizing on South Africa’s numerical disadvantage.

Despite the defeat, the South African government remains steadfast in its support.

“Government commends Bafana Bafana for their spirited performance… While the final score was not what the nation had hoped for, the team represented South Africa with unity, determination, and a sense of pride on the world’s biggest stage”.

As the team prepares for their remaining Group A matches against South Korea and the Czech Republic, the nation is urged to continue wearing green and gold on “Bafana Fridays” and rally behind the boys.

The journey has just begun, and South Africa believes in Bafana Bafana’s ability to bounce back stronger.
