Divine Tower Schools Abuja revives traditions, values of past generations

The Divine Tower and Tiffany International Schools, Gwako area of Gwagwalada, Abuja on Wednesday, 29th October, 2025, celebrated and revived the culture, traditions, fashion, and values of past generations.

In commemoration of its “Old School Day”, the event began with a rally round the community, dressing in old school attires with gathering at the school hall, featuring teacher presentation, brief history of education in Nigeria, the Old School dance, drama among other side attractions.

Divine Tower and Tiffany International Schools was founded six years ago, precisely 9th September, 2019 had seen since then focuses on academics, while also believes that teaching morals and values is essential for students’ development.

Speaking at the event, the founder and the Director, Ameh Benjamin Emmanuel said that during old school days, there were strict rules, corporal punishment, adding that the teaching, rote learning, memorization were also limited to chalkboards, textbooks.

Comparing to the modern school days, he emphasized on student-centered learning, creativity, and critical thinking, revealing that technology integration such as digital tools, online resources, and educational apps are widely used.

Mr Emmanuel pressed further that the structure of old school days can be appealing, especially when it comes to discipline and focus on core subjects, he said some people find that the clear rules and expectations helped them stay on track and achieve their goals.

“In old school days, students were often taught to respect authority, follow rules, and prioritize academics. These values can be beneficial in many ways. However, modern education also has its advantages, such as promoting creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability”.

He stated that physical aspects of studying in the old school days often involved textbooks and workbooks, adding that, “Students relied on physical textbooks, workbooks for learning.

“Handwritten notes were the norm, with students using pens, pencils, and paper. Students would visit libraries to find books, journals, and other resources for research. Students would sit at their desks, often in rows, and work on assignments and projects.
“In contrast, modern school days often feature: E-books, online textbooks, and digital tools are widely used. Laptops and tablets: Many students use devices for note-taking, research, and assignments, access vast amounts of information online, often from anywhere”, he said.

The Director also said respect at old school days often emphasized authority, discipline, and respect for tradition which create a structured learning environment, while warned that any misconduct from students might lead to expulsion.

Earlier, the Principal of the school, Patient Emmanuel appreciated the teachers and students who organized the event and who also dressed in different old school attires to mark the day, praising them for dressing freely. She urged students to adapt to good morals and values learned in the school.
