EU, ECOWAS reacts over Senegal’s elections postponement

The European Union Commission has said that the announcement by the Senegalese authorities of an indefinite postponement of the presidential election scheduled for the 25 February, 2024 opens a period of uncertainty in Senegal.

In a statement released by the Commission after the Senegalese President, Macky Sall in his address to the nation, on Saturday made announcement of indefinite postponement of the presidential election due to electoral issues which he warned could fuel disputes.

The EU who backed the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States position that called on stakeholders to work, in a peaceful climate, to hold a transparent, inclusive and credible election, as soon as possible and with respect for the State of law, in order to preserve the long tradition of stability and democracy in Senegal.

Also, in its reactions, the ECOWAS commission noted the decision of Senegalese authorities to postpone Presidential election scheduled to take place on 25 February 2024.

While expressed concern over the circumstances that led to the postponement of the election and appeals to the competent authorities to expedite the various processes in order to set a new date for the election.

In its communique on Saturday, the Commission further urged the entire political class to prioritize dialogue and collaboration for transparent, inclusive and credible elections.

ECOWAS commission saluted the President, Macky Sall for upholding his earlier decision not to run for another term and encourage him to continue to defend and protect Senegal’s long-standing democratic tradition.
