FG vows to unlock tourism full potential as catalyst of advancement

The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday pledged to unlock full potential of tourism as catalyst for socio-economic advancement.

Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John who made the pledge at the African Youth Tourism Festival in Lagos, urged Nigerian youths to embrace tourism as a tool for unity and progress of the country and the continent.

According to her, “The Federal Ministry of Tourism Nigeria will support in ensuring there are adequate investments in people and infrastructure; the promotion of entrepreneurship, and safeguarding our natural environments.

“With this, we can unlock the full potential of tourism as a catalyst for socio-economic advancement”, the Minister said.

She added that by embracing sustainable practices and responsible tourism initiatives, the Goverment can ensure that benefits derived from tourism equitably distributed, empowering local communities, preserving the cultural and ecological heritage for generations to come.

Ade-John noted that the African Youth Tourism Festival highlights the vibrant spirit of the continent and the importance of tourism in bringing together for unity and sustainable development of the tourism sector.

She said, “Africa’s rich cultures, traditions, and natural wonders are treasures that can and will propel us forward. Tourism not only connects us as Africans but also boosts our economies and creates opportunities for all”.

The Minister who was honoured at the event for her dedication, innovation with a deep commitment to foster sustainable practices in harnessing the potential of tourism as a driver of economic growth and cultural exchange, called to build a brighter, more inclusive Africa through transformative power of tourism.

Ade-John said, “It is imperative that we reflect upon the profound significance of embracing our cultural heritage and harnessing the power of tourism for the greater good of our nations.

“Africa possesses an unparalleled wealth that can serve as a catalyst for progress and prosperity. Tourism promotes unity by bridging differences and fostering understanding among people.

“It is not just about sightseeing; it is also about building connections and breaking barriers. Our continent is home to diverse ethnicities, languages, and customs and it is through tourism that we discover common threads that bind us together as Africans.

“When individuals from different corners of our continent converge to explore heritage sites, partake in festivals, and immerse themselves in local communities, they are not merely tourists but ambassadors of unity.

“Tourism drives sustainable development by creating jobs, alleviating poverty, supporting local businesses, and protecting our environment”, the Minister submitted.

The convener, Ambassador Ayo Omotoso in his welcome speech said the African Youth Tourism Festival is international important as a veritable platform to engage the younger generation in their quest to explore, venture into vast value chain that tourism provides while appreciated participants and other dignitaries that were present.

Lots of side attraction at the event such as the Queen of Drums, Aralola who showcased the drum as the oldest mobile telephone on earth, a powerful tool to communicate and the rhythmic beauty of African culture.
